Biograph Film Company

-It was founded in 1895 by William Kennedy Dickson who had worked for Thomas Edison;

-first company in the US to be solely dedicated to film production;

-in 1896 the Biography projector was introduced;

-it soon became the leader company in the film industry;

-in 1908 D. W. Griffith signed a contract with the company, he is considered a pioneer of modern filmmaking techniques;

-always in 1908 Biograph joined the ‘Edison Trust’, formally called the Motion Picture Patents Company, whose goal was to block smaller producers;

-the company the first film ever made in Hollywood, In Old California (1910);

-in 1914 D. W. Griffith left the company and was followed by many other artists, so the company couldn’t rely on known faces to market its films;

-the company struggled to produce feature length films, which were becoming more and more popular;

-in 1915 Biograph released its last feature and a year later its last short;

-in 1928 its facilities were acquired by Herbert Yates.
